If choosing the best bedding right off the bat were easy, everyone would be doing it. There would be no need for research, consultation, or seeking advice on what to buy. But we know there are standard in place that you must pay attention to choose the best bedding, one of which begins with the size of your mattress. The goal of this guide is to help you choose the most appropriate bedding for the twin XL mattress.
Twin XL mattress
You need to know the size of the mattress before buying bedding, because the last thing you want to do is to make costly mistakes. So what is a twin XL mattress?
Twin XL mattress has the same width of 39 inches as with the twin mattress. While both have the same width, the twin XL is 80 inches long. That’s 5 inches longer than the twin mattress. It does take up quite a bit of space, but it is still a single sleeper mattress, suitable only for a single sleeper bed.
Does mattress depth matter?
Some may have told you that the depth of the mattress you choose comes down to personal preference. While that’s perfectly fine, preference may not be a determining factor here. Depth does, because it is what will help you to determine the type of bedding to choose. The twin XL mattresses have three different depths as highlighted below:
- The standard mattress has a depth between 7 and 9 inches
- The deep mattress has a depth between 10 and 15 inches
- The extra deep twin XL has a depth between 16 and 22 inches
Does a topper’s depth affect the size of the bedding?
First, it is important to keep in mind that it isn’t necessary that you buy a mattress topper. Since the topper only adds the extra, luxurious comfort to the bed, buying or not buying one comes down to personal preference. On average, a mattress topper can add about two or three extra inches to the twin XL mattress, which definitely has an impact on the size of the bedding to choose.
How to choose the bedding
You should determine the fitted sheet size before buying. You also need to account for the combined depth of the mattress, the topper, and the padding if you have any of these. The fitted sheet size of the twin XL mattress is 39 inches wide by 80 inches long.
Make sure you know the size of your comforter’s insert before you choose a duvet cover. That’s because it is likely to vary by a few inches. Generally, though, it is often recommended that you choose a duvet cover with minimum length of 90 inches for a twin XL mattress. On average, an extra long duvet cover should measure 68 inches wide and 90 inches long. If you find something that has a bit of a larger dimension, go for it, but make sure you account for proper fit.
